Important Update: Mounjaro for Weight Loss – What You Need to Know

We’ve had a number of enquiries about Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) for weight loss, so here’s the latest guidance from the Health Board across Greater Manchester.
Key Information:
- Please do not book a GP appointment regarding Mounjaro for weight loss.
- Your GP cannot prescribe Mounjaro for weight loss.
This is a decision that applies across the whole of Greater Manchester. - If you are eligible, your GP will contact you directly.
You do not need to contact the surgery.
Why Can’t My GP Prescribe It?
The Greater Manchester Health Board has confirmed that GPs will not be involved in prescribing Mounjaro for weight loss.
Instead, specialist providers will be selected to run this service, which will start in August 2025.
Until then, no service is available.
Who Will Be Eligible?
Eligibility will be assessed by the Health Board, not by your GP.
The eligible group will include:
- Patients with a BMI over 50
AND - Four of the following conditions:
- High Blood Pressure
- Abnormal Lipids
- Sleep Apnoea
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Type 2 Diabetes
👉 If you do not meet these criteria, you will not qualify.
👉 Your GP cannot take any action if you are not eligible.
Once the service is up and running, the Health Board will contact the GP surgery with a list of eligible patients. If you’re on this list, your GP will get in touch with you directly.
