Staying Safe This Summer: What You Need to Know About COVID-19 and Other Seasonal Illnesses

While summer usually means holidays, sunshine and outdoor fun, it’s also a time when certain health risks can catch us off guard — including a rise in COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.
At The Uplands Medical Practice, we’re seeing an increase in seasonal bugs, especially among vulnerable patients. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and those around you.
🦠 COVID-19: Yes, It’s Still Around
You might have heard in the news that COVID-19 cases are on the rise again in parts of the UK, particularly driven by newer variants. Although many people now experience mild symptoms, it can still pose a serious risk to older adults and those with chronic conditions.
Top Tips:
- Stay home if you’re feeling unwell – especially if you have a fever or a cough.
- Use a face covering in busy or enclosed spaces (like buses or GP waiting rooms).
- Keep windows open to let fresh air circulate when indoors.
- Wash your hands regularly, especially before eating or touching your face.
🌞 Stay Cool and Hydrated
While we’re on the subject of staying well – don’t forget about the heat. High temperatures can quickly cause dehydration or heat exhaustion, especially for young children, older people, and those with existing health issues.
Keep in mind:
- Drink plenty of fluids – aim for 6–8 glasses a day.
- Avoid being outdoors in the peak heat (11am–3pm).
- Wear loose, light-coloured clothing and suncream with SPF 30 or higher.
💉 Vaccine Updates
If you’re eligible for a spring or autumn COVID-19 booster or flu vaccine, we’ll be in touch when it’s time to book. Staying up to date with your vaccinations is one of the best ways to protect yourself from serious illness.
📱Use the NHS App for Convenience
Did you know you can manage your appointments, order repeat prescriptions, and see test results via the NHS App? It’s free, secure, and a great way to stay in control of your healthcare.
📣 Final Thought
We’re here to support your health all year round – not just when you’re unwell. If you’re feeling unsure about symptoms, medication, or your general wellbeing, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
Stay safe, enjoy the sunshine, and remember – a little care goes a long way.
