Look & Feel Every Month: Checking Your Breasts Could Save Your Life

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK – but the good news is that most people survive when it is found and treated early. That’s why it’s so important to take a few minutes each month to check your breasts.
At The Uplands Medical Practice, we want to encourage all our patients to get into the simple habit of “look and feel every month.”
Why check?
Breast cancer can affect anyone – women and men – and the earlier it’s spotted, the easier it is to treat. Regular checking helps you become familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel, so you can notice any changes sooner.
What to look and feel for
Everyone’s breasts are different, but here are some things to keep an eye out for:
- A lump or thickened area
- Changes in size, shape, or feel
- Skin that looks dimpled, puckered, or red
- Nipple changes (such as inversion, rash, or discharge)
- Unexplained pain in your breast or armpit
If you notice anything unusual, even if you’re not sure, it’s always best to get it checked.
Your GP is here to listen
We understand it can feel worrying to talk about changes, but your GP wants to hear from you. No concern is too small. Most changes turn out not to be cancer – but it’s always safest to check.
How to make it a habit
- Choose the same time each month to do your check – perhaps after your period or set a reminder on your phone.
- Use both sight and touch – stand in front of a mirror and gently feel around your breasts and armpits.
- Make it part of your routine – like brushing your teeth or doing your monthly bills.
