Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening – Early Detection Saves Lives
Did you know that a simple screening test could save your life?
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening is designed to detect a swelling (aneurysm) in the aorta — the main blood vessel that carries blood from your heart down through your tummy (abdomen).
If the wall of the aorta weakens and starts to expand, it can burst, causing serious internal bleeding. AAA often develops slowly and without symptoms, which is why screening is so important.
Who is eligible for AAA screening?
AAA screening is offered to all men aged 65 and over.
Anyone assigned male at birth who is over the age of 64 can have this test, even if they haven’t received an invitation.
The screening is:
- Quick and painless – it’s a simple ultrasound scan of your tummy
- Free on the NHS
- Potentially life-saving, as early detection means treatment can begin before the aneurysm becomes dangerous
How to book your screening
📞 If you’re aged 65 or over and have not yet been screened, you can make an appointment by calling the AAA Screening Office on 0161 291 5716.

Raising awareness
Our colleagues at Manchester University Foundation Trust have shared some fantastic resources to help raise awareness about AAA screening.
You can watch short videos featuring well-known faces Craig Cash, John Henshaw, Jimmi Harkishin, and Clinical Director Nas, who all help explain why this screening matters.
